Alisher Usmanov is the founder of USM Holdings, a diversified international holding company which brings together a number of businesses, including: Metalloinvest, a leading global supplier of HBI and iron ore products; Baikal Mining Company, which holds an exploration licence for the largest copper deposit in Russia, MegaFon, one of the largest mobile operators in Russia and a pioneer in 4G/LTE services; and Mail.Ru Group, the Russian-language internet market leader.
In addition, USM Holdings manages a number of rapidly developing businesses in Russia and abroad, including UTH Russia, which comprises the media holding company CTC Media and the Disney Russia, MUZ-TV, and U TV channels. Mr.Usmanov also owns Kommersant Publishing House and a stake of over 30% in Arsenal Football Club.
Mr. Usmanov is an active member of the executive bodies of a number of non-governmental organisations and companies that play key roles in the development of the Russian economy. Since 2006, he has been on the Board of the Russian Union of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs. Mr. Usmanov served as the general director of Gazprom Investholding from 2000 to 2014. Prior to that, he was an adviser to the chairman of Gazprom and the first deputy general director of Gazprom Investholding. From 1994 to 1998, Mr. Usmanov headed Interfin Interbank Investment and Finance Company. Between 1995 and 1997, he was the first deputy chairman of MAPO-Bank. From 1994 to 1995, he was an adviser to the general director of Moscow Aviation Industrial Enterprise. From 1990 until 1994, Mr. Usmanov worked as the deputy general director of Intercross JSC.
Mr. Usmanov attaches great significance to philanthropic activities. He is the founder of the Art, Science and Sport Charity Foundation and a trustee for a range of social, educational and cultural organisations, including the Russian Geographical Society and Moscow State Institute of International Relations.
Mr. Usmanov devotes considerable attention to the development of sports in Russia and globally. For several years, he has been the president of the International Fencing Federation; he is also the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Russian Fencing Federation and a member of the Russian Olympian Sportsmen Support Fund. Since 2015, Mr. Usmanov has been a member of the International Olympic Committee's Olympic Channel Commission. He is also part of the Russian independent public anti-doping commission, established in 2016 at the initiative of Vladimir Putin, President of the Russian Federation.
In 2013, Mr. Usmanov was awarded the Order for Service to the Fatherland IV class for his services to the state, as well as his active community and charitable activities. He was also awarded the Order of Alexander Nevsky and the Order of Honour of the Russian Federation for his professional achievements and long-term contribution to business, as well as the Medal for Contribution to International Cooperation by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation and the Order of Friendship of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
In 2016, for his considerable philanthropic and societal contributions, Alisher Usmanov received the Distinction For a Good Deed, as well as the highest award of the Russian Council of Muftis, Order of Al Fakhr I class for strengthening mutual understanding between people of different nationalities. In 1976, Mr. Usmanov graduated from the Moscow State Institute of International Relations (MGIMO) with a degree in international law. In 1997, he received a degree in banking from the Finance Academy under the Government of the Russian Federation. He is fluent in English, French, Russian and Uzbek.
