Ural Steel successfully passes shipbuilding steel production audit
5 June 2017
Ural Steel (part of Metalloinvest) has successfully passed an audit by DNV GL, one of the leading international certification bodies, and has received documentation certifying that its steel casting and rolled steel facilities meet the DNV GL (shipping) classification requirements and the DNV GL maritime standards. As a result, Ural Steel is now an approved supplier of products under DNV GL, DNV and GL rules.
Dmitry Bochkov, Head of Quality Control and Environmental Management at Ural Steel, commented: "We have been certified for our rolled products for shipbuilding for a long time, and periodically we are required to reaffirm them. This time is particularly significant because in 2015, two certifying companies located in Norway and Germany were brought together into one body: DNV GL. Until that point, the companies both worked according to their own standards, and our partners - shipbuilding companies or their trading intermediaries - used to order steel that adhered to either the Norwegian company's certification standards or the German company's. Now, our work has become easier, as the standards of the two certifying bodies have been unified. As a result, the enterprise now only needs to be certified once every three years, rather than every two like it was before."
Vladimir Karklin, technical expert of the Russian office of DNV GL conducted Ural Steel's re-audit. He checked the enterprise's current documentation thoroughly and examined the details of the production chain for rolled products and shipbuilding steel, including how finished products are dispatched. In his concluding remarks, the surveyor emphasised that Ural Steel's production adheres to all DNV GL standards. All of the enterprise's shipbuilding steel products were included in the new certificate, and no amendments had to be made to the production technology. In addition, during the audit, Ural Steel affirmed not only the high quality of its sheet rolled shipbuilding products for export; the audit also confirmed that its steel meets Russian shipbuilding standards. Ural Steel's DNV GL certificate is valid for three years.
Ural Steel's rolled products have always enjoyed significant demand both from Russian and foreign shipbuilders. Due to the renovation of its electric arc furnace and plate rolling facilities as part of Metalloinvest's investment programme, production is of a higher quality and has become more competitive. For example, the installation of a new rolling mill has enabled the enterprise to produce rolled products from shipbuilding steel that is of the required thickness. Today, oil rigs, dry cargo vessels and ocean liners are built from Novotroitsk steel. Metalloinvest is determined to maintain its position in the international market for rolled shipbuilding products and grow its share of the Russian market.
