Metalloinvest views China as a promising market for the supply of HBI
12 April 2018
Andrey Varichev, CEO of Management Company Metalloinvest and member of the board of the Russian Union of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs (RSPP), took part in the annual Metals & Mining and Fertilisers Conference, organised by Sberbank CIB.
According to Mr. Varichev, Metalloinvest considers China as one of the most promising markets for the supply of hot briquetted iron (HBI), linked to the development of modern electric steelmaking plants in the country.
Metalloinvest is the largest producer of commercial HBI in the world. The launch of HBI-3 Plant at Lebedinsky GOK in 2017 strengthened the Company's position in the market for this premium and environmentally-friendly metallised raw material.
During the panel discussion, Mr. Varichev commented that the preservation of the environment is the main challenge in the world of metallurgy today, and modern technologies allow us to make ferrous metallurgy a greener industry. In his opinion, China's policy aimed at reducing inefficient steelmaking capacities while maintaining high production volumes of steel creates a new metallurgical industry in the country with less impact on the environment.
The Metalloinvest CEO also commented on the importance of state support for infrastructure development: “State investment in transport and energy infrastructure not only incentivises communication, the use of new land area, business and entrepreneurship, population, population movement, but also encourages the development of the mechanical engineering industry as an equipment supplier for the metals and mining sector. State investment in infrastructure also creates demand in those sectors that satisfy consumer needs.”
The Metals & Mining and Fertilisers Conference traditionally attracts leading Russian and international corporates representing those industries. The Conference was also attended by representatives of Sberbank, Sberbank CIB, Severstal, UMMC-Holding, EuroChem, PhosAgro, Akron, John Johnson, CRU Head of China, and Tzin Davey, head of the section of non-ferrous metallurgy in the department of raw materials, within the Chinese Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, as well as many others.
