Dobro Conference 2018: from theory to practice

15 May 2018

Dobro 2018, the fourth annual educational conference for charitable funds and non-profit organisations, took place from 11-12 May 2018. The event, organised by Mail.Ru's Dobro service, as well as Metalloinvest and MegaFon, took place this year in the form of a hackathon.

24 charitable organisations took part in the hackathon, and discussed the implementation of social issues in IT projects with developers and project managers at major Russian companies. In previous years, representatives of charitable organisations only gained a theoretical understanding of these issues; this year, the event organisers decided to foreground the practical aspect. Following the Dobro 2018 hackathon, several projects received support from the organising companies.

Julia Mazanova, Social Policy and Corporate Communications Director, Management Company Metalloinvest, commented: "Dobro has once again demonstrated its effectiveness and facilitated the exchange of experience between enthusiastic representatives of non-profit organisations from various Russian regions, while training them in the use of new technologies and giving them new skills. Not all of the participants believed that they could create a technological project to solve real and relevant issues, with their own hands; but after only two days of intensive work with mentors and experts, we have seen the fruits of our participants' own efforts.

"Teams from towns in which Metalloinvest operates created four projects: 'Otkliknis', a search platform for volunteers and charity recipients from Gubkin; an online resource for future mothers in Zheleznogorsk; a virtual exploration project around the steel production facilities from the Stary Oskol team Zhelezno!; and a website for the Centre of Integrated Resocialisation of Citizens in Novotroitsk. In addition to these initiatives, participants developed other technological resources to expand the scope of social initiatives. For Metalloinvest, it is particularly important that the ideas developed are implemented. Each of the projects developed will receive the essential expert and methodical support, and will gain additional assistance in promoting and involving participants."

Over the two days of the Dobro 2018 hackathon, charitable funds and non-profit organisations created over 20 prototypes for websites, applications and platforms to help solve relevant social issues. The majority of the solutions were connected with the social adaptation and vocational guidance of orphans through creating educational courses and video materials, as well as through databases and CRM systems to process applications to charitable funds more quickly.
