Metalloinvest and Signify complete the second stage of lighting system modernisation at Lebedinsky GOK, Mikhailovsky GOK and OEMK

4 October 2018

The company Signify (formerly Philips Lighting), the world leader in light technology, has modernised the lighting systems at three Metalloinvest company enterprises: Lebedinsky GOK, Mikhailovsky GOK and OEMK. More than 5,000 light fixtures were changed in 15 workshops at the three enterprises.

As a result, the second stage of the major lighting system modernisation programme at the Company’s enterprises was completed. This has resulted in the level of lighting being increased by up to ten times, depending on the region, but the amount of electrical energy used has been reduced by 73 per cent. This is equivalent to a saving of 28 million kilowatt-hours per year, which is comparable with the energy-use of a small city.

Metalloinvest has been working with Signify since 2013. Andrey Ugarov, the First Deputy CEO, COO of Management Company Metalloinvest, commented: “This year we continued the successful realisation of the project to increase the energy efficiency of the lighting in our plants, which is an important investment in ensuring the safety of production, the reduction of the Company’s costs and the protection of the environment.”

Signify is the general contractor in the project, carrying out the work on a turnkey basis. The main objectives of the project are to increase the safety of production work, and to improve economic efficiency of the lighting systems. The main challenge of the project was changing the old MV lamps, which boosted the energy efficiency and quality of the lighting system.

Philips Green Perform G3 lighting solutions for heavy industry were installed in the majority of working zones. In the hot workshops, Philips MegaLuxe gas discharge light fixtures were installed, which are a reliable solution allowing functionality in hot zones with temperatures up to 90 degrees. In order to measure the results of the project at the enterprises, a monitoring system was installed to calculate the amount of electrical energy used by the lighting systems.

Eric Benedetti, General Director of Signify, Russia and CIS, said: “Today, we are seeing particularly high interest in lighting system modernisation from industrial clients. In the first instance, this can be explained by the high potential for economic savings. At large metallurgical and heavy industry enterprises, expenditure on lighting ranges from 6-12 per cent of total energy use, and because of this, the potential savings after undertaking a modernisation process average at 100-200 mn roubles per year.”
