HackMakeFest-2019 takes place at Metalloinvest’s Innovation Centre

11 April 2019

HackMakeFest-2019, the first scientific technological festival for students of the A.A. Ugarov Stary Oskol Technological Institute and Oskol Polytechnic College of NUST MISiS has taken place at Metalloinvest’s JSA Innovation Centre.

Over 30 students aspiring for future careers in automation, electric power and information technologies participated in the event.

The event consisted of master classes and a major two-day team hackathon competition. The forum’s main theme was the Internet of Things - creating a network of objects that interact with each other and greatly simplify life. Participants had to organise a brainstorming session and create a device prototype to suit the theme of the festival.

Oleg Laktyushin, Director of the IT department at Metalloinvest, said: “Events that enable students to apply their knowledge in practice are very important. This event is our way of helping the university to adapt its development programme for students who will potentially join us after university graduation.”

Andrey Bartov, Regional Development Director at JSA Group, said: “We are honoured that the Innovation Centre has become a platform uniting science, business and information technologies and that it allows young specialists to engage actively in anything that is related to information technologies.”

Anton Solovyev, Assistant Professor of the Automation and Information Systems Department of A.A. Ugarov Stary Oskol Technological Institute, a branch of the National University of Science and Technology MISiS (NUST MISiS), said: “We would like to increase the popularity of our technological professions so that the students remember in future that interesting competitions take place alongside their studies. We are grateful to Metalloinvest for providing such a contemporary platform; everything is innovative, modern, interesting and young people really like it.”

The project developed by Team ‘Reserve’ was recognised as the best created at the young developers’ forum.

Stanislav Emelyanov, a member of Team ‘Reserve’, commented: “Our ‘Custodian’ system provides a way to monitor workers’ health (to measure pulse and temperature) and to analyse the environment for increased noise or vibration levels and send warning signals. Employees’ wellbeing matters to every employer, so that they work in a sustainable and productive manner. We are participating in this event for the first time. The Hackathon gives us the opportunity to think of new ideas and try them out – and seeing the results motivates us further. This has been a very good experience.”

Nikolay Durnev, member of jury and head of JSA Group, said that all teams worked at a high level to create device prototypes in a short space of time. They came up with interesting technological solutions, original ideas and had good presentations. All teams received participation certificates, while the winners of the first three prizes received diplomas and valuable gifts.

The Innovation Centre was opened in Stary Oskol in July 2018 to consolidate and advance Metalloinvest’s competencies around digital technologies and to develop progressive solutions in managing production and business processes. The Innovation Centre is the main platform for combined development and testing of technologies and solutions developed by the Company together with partners such as Industry 4.0 - SAP and Accenture.
