Ural Steel summarises its environmental activities for 2018
31 May 2019
Ural Steel (part of Metalloinvest) has summarised its environmental work in 2018 ahead of World Environment Day. Metalloinvest allocated approximately 300 mn roubles for initiatives to promote environmental conservation and minimise its environmental impact.
Evgeny Maslov, Managing Director of Ural Steel, commented: “One of our production priorities is to have an environmental policy that offers the best solutions to minimise human impact on the environment. We are resolving these issues by modernising equipment and introducing modern technologies.”
Ural Steel is undertaking major work to reduce atmospheric emissions. Measures have been taken to keep recovery facilities operational, and new filtration systems are being refurbished and installed. According to Ural Steel’s environmental protection data, the enterprise has reduced its annual atmospheric emissions by over 3%, while cutting atmospheric emissions by one third in the last decade.
Ural Steel has its own certified laboratory to monitor the environment. The laboratory monitors atmospheric emissions from stationary sources and air quality in the enterprise’s health protection zone. Last year the laboratory carried out over 36,000 data readings. The enterprise’s atmospheric emissions are significantly lower than maximum permissible standards.
A closed water supply cycle was installed at Ural Steel over ten years ago. Work continues to reduce the level of water intake from the Ural River to maximise the elimination of water loss during technological processes.
The sustainable use of resources and efficient waste management and consumption is of paramount importance to the enterprise. Its comprehensive approach allows the enterprise to utilise over 1 mn tonnes of waste. Over half of the waste is recycled at the enterprise, while 48% is used by third parties. Prior to utilisation, 1.5% of the waste is transported to the enterprise’s eco-friendly landfill site.
The enterprise focuses on enhancing its environmental management system in line with the ISO 14001 international standard and improving employee education and training on environmental legislation and encouraging environmental awareness. In 2018, approximately 100 managers and experts took part in environmental protection training.
Minimising environmental impact is a key part of Metalloinvest’s development strategy. EcoVadis, the environmental agency, rated the Company’s environmental protection activities highly. In November 2018, the Company was awarded the "Silver" level of recognition of corporate social responsibility (CSR) practices. Metalloinvest was ranked in the top 11% of producers rated by EcoVadis globally in the manufacture of basic iron and steel industry (over 900 companies). The Company was also rated in 6th place in the WWF’s ratings of Russian metals and mining companies in the field of environmental responsibility in 2018. This is the leading ranking for companies in the ferrous metallurgy industry.
