History of the Profession

The history of the profession of control room operator is part and parcel of the development of the steelmaking, and is considered reasonably young, compared with other professions in this industry. As the technologies developed, including mechanisation and automation, this created the need for a role of controlling this technology. As a result, the role of system operator, who manages the steel-manufacturing processes and maintains efficient functioning of automated machinery, was established.

Control room operators manage all the technological processes of the rolling production and oversee the functioning of the equipment, checking the indicator screens and signal lights, and adjusting the processes of production lines accordingly. The most complex part of this role is translating signals into the production realities and taking decisions to change the conditions of production. These specialists maintain working schedules and the temperature of the rolling equipment. It is crucial to ensure adherence to safety standards, maintain equipment in good condition and sustain its uninterrupted operation.

Knowledge and Skills

The role of control room operator requires good knowledge of physics, mathematics, information technology, and theoretical knowledge of machinery, electrical engineering and electronics, mechanisation and automation of production, dismantling and reassembling machinery and components, and diagnosing and repairing them. A control room operator should be knowledgeable about steel types and grades, allowed deviations from the norm for rolled steel, the characteristics of equipment, and the possible reasons for it malfunctioning. The operator of rolling production must not only understand the specifics and principles of mechanisation and automation of production, but also know the stages of the technological process of hot metal rolling. It is crucial that the control room operator understands the compression processes for different types of steel, the fundamentals of rolling theory and deformations in steel, the basics of roller calibration, and the forms of, and reasons for, flaws during rolling. Operators of rolling production should be ready to master new working techniques as the production processes are constantly improved.

Personal Qualities

The management of the automated processes of metalworking requires the ability to quickly focus and keep attention on a number of objects at the same time, and to analyse and assess production processes. Particularly valuable personal qualities in this role include powers of observation, developed eye-hand coordination, the ability to simultaneously manage different technological processes, a combination of intense concentration and attention allocation, intuition, the ability to predict results, reliability of assessments, endurance, and decisiveness.


Perspectives for career advancement depend primarily on the level of education, personal initiative, organisational skills, and the ability to fulfil complex production tasks. As the operators of control rooms are the primary technological staff in the rolling shop, there are no boundaries to career advancement from this role. Once the operator has been added to the talent pool, and received the necessary training and character references, promotion to the position of overseer and many other roles is possible.
