OEMK ships first batch of grinding balls

13 October 2020

OEMK (part of Metalloinvest) has shipped the first batch of steel grinding balls with a diameter of 120 mm to Andrey Varichev Mikhailovsky GOK.

Sergey Shishkovets, Managing Director of OEMK, said: "It is a great honour for OEMK to send the first batch of grinding balls to our mining colleagues at Andrey Varichev Mikhailovsky GOK. This new production line will further reinforce the ties between Metalloinvest's enterprises and help deliver synergies.

Anton Zakharov, Managing Director of Andrey Varichev Mikhailovsky GOK, commented: "The launch of this new production line at OEMK will allow us to completely eliminate supply disruption risks, reduce warehousing costs and maintain stable prices, while working together on grinding ball quality and, as a result, improving the efficiency of Andrey Varichev Mikhailovsky GOK."

In addition to the 120 mm grinding balls, the ball rolling mill at OEMK will also produce 100 mm diameter balls. They will be supplied to Lebedinsky GOK, which is also part of Metalloinvest. Grinding balls are used in the production cycle of mining and processing enterprises to grind ore in ball mills.

The commemorative launch of the ball rolling facility took place on 9 October 2020. Metalloinvest's investment into the project is approximately 1 bn roubles. Key technological equipment was supplied by the Chinese engineering company WISDRI.

To meet the demand from Metalloinvest enterprises, the ball rolling facility will produce approximately 43,000 tonnes of grinding balls annually. The transition to using grinding balls produced by OEMK will reduce the cost of iron ore raw materials at Lebedinsky GOK and Mikhailovsky GOK by optimising supply logistics, reducing transportation costs and guaranteeing product quality. In addition, the capacity of the ball rolling facility allows for the prospect of supplying balls to third parties.
