Women’s Health

The programme operates in: Kursk and Belgorod Regions
The programme is implemented as a part of the tripartite agreements between Metalloinvest, and the regions and towns, in which the company operates, and is coordinated by the National Fund for Women’s Health.

The programme’s key purpose is to create a comprehensive system for early diagnosis of breast cancer.

The early diagnosis system means that the disease can be discovered in its early stages and, therefore, is the first step towards reducing mortality from this disease. Provision has been made for a unified system of exchange of mammograms between medical centres and cancer counselling to support women and their families after cancer diagnosis.

A crucial mission of the programme is to inform women about the necessity of health check-ups. In 2012, during the programme’s Open Days, more than 1,000 women were screened for breast cancer. Nine cases of cancer were diagnosed; eight of those cases were in the early stages, where the probability of full recovery is as high as 94%. All the women received treatment in good time. Women who had been diagnosed with cancer were referred to the Kursk regional medical centre for supplementary consultations and treatment, individual cases will be looked into by specialists from the Russian Cancer Research Centre.

Key achievements:

  • the number of cancer cases diagnosed in the early stages increased and noticeably exceeded the national level: 72 people per 100,000 population compared to 66.7 people per 100,000 population;
  • the level of mortality in the first year after diagnosis dropped below the national average: 6.3% against 7.4%;
  • specialists from the Russian Cancer Research Centre carried out 2,000 secondary mammogram analyses;
  • 203 medical staff received further qualifications.
